Motta in the centuries
Motta is a delightfully town settling on and near a basaltic cliff named neck. It is on the South West of the slopes of the highest active volcano of Europe: Etna, and stands over the largest part of the fertile plain of Catania. The tourists who want to get to it have to come deliberately because of its orographical position. That's why in the past the inhabitants used to live isolately and were firmly attached to their way of life, language, gestures and customs. The town of Motta comes out between two very different wings of territory: in the west, a luxuriant country full of mediterranean vegetation : almond trees, vineyards, orange and olive trees; in the east, beyond the line of a very little river, spreads out a line of sandy dunes and golden hills of selfsown vegetation: the Sieli. On this side, the lava rocks are covered with lots of prickly pears, which trong round the base of the castle.
