THE NECK
An isolated blocki of lava mostly columnar on which the castle was built. Following the most recent data this lava is 550.000 years old. Scientists think that in distant ages there was a little volcanic cone where the lava, not being able to come out because of the silica which made id very pasty cooled off solidifying inside. In the course of the time the atmospheric agents eroded outer wrappings leaving in the open air the lava solidified into the cone. This is Neck , because it looks like a column or a neck. In the nearby valley there is no trace of volcanic rocks. This means that there was no volcanic explosion. It might be a "diatrema" a different example of volcanic explosion.
